It’s Only A Craft Show!

Presentation is King Whether it's Citrus or Watercolor

Something interesting happened this morning that stopped us in our tracks. It wasn’t the first time it had happened, nor the 100th; but every time, it just jerks us to a standing stop…

We were zipping around Facebook and saw some pictures of someĀ  quality craft work; but the pieces were on a sheet on a fold-up table at a craft show. The one of us who still thinks changing makers’ attitudes is possible emailed the maker, commenting about the strong work, but questioning the presentation. The maker immediately wrote back “It’s only a craft show, for God’s Sakes!”

The perceived value of citrus, real estateĀ  or art has everything to do with presentation. See the mineolas above? The info card above the three darker, smaller ones called them “mineolas” and announced they were selling for just under fifty cents each. At another grocery, the bigger piece of citrus, even though the blue tag affixed to it clearly says “mineola”, was selling as a HONEYBELL for twice as much, just under a dollar. To these tongues, all four tasted the same in a taste test later on.

Perceived value may be the name, the story, or the presentation. All together, however, they entice a shopper to buy. A HONEYBELL may or may not be worth twice as much as a mineola, but when I went back to buy a HONEYBELL for this photo, those few still there had been moved to a smaller basket.

Wherever you present your product, it sells best when it entices the shopper. If you are proud of what you create, convey that pride in your presentation, or take it home with you because it doesn’t sell. Your choice…
