My romance with clay began when I was about 10 years old. A wonderful potter by the name of Eugene Deutsch came to my school and demonstrated his art. He carved forms, he threw shapes on the potters wheel and I was hooked, though it would be another 20 years before I could begin learning how to shape mud into something recognizable.
Because I came to clay later in life, I began my study in local art centers, having been blessed by geography, with outstanding facilities close by. When the Junior College system developed, I studied there until I had to accept the role of single parent to three young sons. As the boys grew, I was able to return to the College of Lake County in Grayslake Illinois, where I continued to study under Tony Holmes, for about as long as he would have me there.
Though Tony Holmes taught me most of what I know, I have also taken workshops and classes under Eric Jensen, Harris Deller, Peter Callas, Lana Wilson, Leah Leitson, Jeff Oestrich, Julia Sutter, Jill Grau Tortorella,and probably several others whose names escape me now but whose pots live still in my heart.
I have been showing my work at art shows and festivals all over the country for several years now. I have won a few awards but what’s most important to me is the look in the eye of a person who has fallen in love with a piece I made… it’s a connection that binds us forever. My work is in private collections and homes all over the world. Denmark, Australia, Germany, Japan…. it astounds me.
I am a potter. I make pots for people to use in their daily lives… to be enjoyed, loved and mostly used.
