East of Madison about a mile out US 278 toward Greensboro is Morgan County’s newest joint; and WOW is it good!
We’d been hearing about it on the radio, so by the time we got there around suppertime tonight, we knew the owners work the circuit, competing for cash with the best BBQ cooks in the US.
The place is easy to find with a metal pig standing on that big red revolver right there above the parking lot. That alone was all it took for us to order the Big Gun Combo - 1/2 chicken, a mess of pulled pork, and a few ribs. Our two sides were same ones we order everywhere – baked beans and cole slaw.
Bill Ronay is the BBQ lover in our family. I like it if it’s good, but it’s a hard sell. Fresh Air in Jackson was my all-time fave until tonight. Their cole slaw has this one beat, although Smokin’s cole slaw is pretty good. Fresh Air’s pulled pork is super, lean & flavorful. Smokin’s is a bit fatty, but that pumps up the flavor. I may have two favorite BBQ places now!
The BBQ sauce in the white pop-top lid on the table is sweet and tangy. I surprised myself by sopping it up off the plate after I was finished slurping down my meal. I could drink the whole bottle it was so good.
One more note about the revolver out front… Bill Ronay may have made this up, but he told me that it’s a cooker, and that the owner takes a cooker like this to the cook-offs. So if you want one for your patio or back yard, inquire within at 1540 Greensboro Hwy! (Can’t you see this cooker being pulled butt-hooked to the van, zooming down the expressway!)
